Cruise Ship Dining Explained

Mary Hanna

Travel Articles | October 18, 2006

Mary Hanna explains the different dining options on the cruise lines.  She gives you advice on each option and why it would be right for you.

There are many cruise ships now that have Freestyle Dining (Norwegian Cruises) or Choice Dining (Prince Cruise line) available. Or on Disney Cruise Lines they have what is called “Rotational Dining”. They have you and your tablemates rotate through the three restaurants each evening. TIP: There is usually open seating for breakfast and lunch in the main dining room. Be adventurous with the menu because if you don’t like something you can send it back for a replacement. And if they have two things on the menu that you like ask for both of them. My husband, John, always orders the Filet Mignon and the Lobster Tail when they are served on the same night. Many times he tells the waiter to bring what the waiter recommends for that evening. This means you don’t have to choose first or second seating. (First seating is 6:00 to 6:30 and Second seating is usually 8:00-8:30). There can be more than one restaurant where you just walk in when you are ready to dine. Every ship will ask for your dining preference when you book your cruise. You can indicate first, second or flexible dining, whichever will make you more comfortable. The newer ships have a 24 hour dining spot which is always casual so if you don’t want to do the formal nights you don’t have to, although I find dressing up to be quite fun. You will have many options for each meal. You may have any meal delivered to your room, taken in the buffet restaurant or in the dining room. There is usually outdoor dining around the pool with hot dogs and hamburgers, pizza, salads, even Tacos. There are also alternative dining rooms available on some ships that require an additional fee but the service and food are generally 4 to 5 star and worth it if you want to splurge. In my experience families with young children and people who go to bed early usually dine in first seating. But if you don’t want to be on a schedule or want to meet new people every night, go for the alternative dining option. Of course you can always ask for a table for two, but be aware that there are only a few of them. If you make a special request one night, John always asks for blue cheese, your waiter will bring it every night. They pride themselves on remembering your tastes. (This only happens when you choose traditional dining). On one cruise we asked for Melba toast, and you bet, every night we had Melba toast. There is one thing I always make clear to the waiter. I am not a big eater but I like to taste everything. I tell this to them the first night so they don’t think I am unhappy with the food. It is their job to keep you happy and they take it very seriously. If you don’t want to eat in the main dining room almost all ships have a Lido café where it is casual but you order from a menu and are served by a waiter. It’s one of the many choices if you don’t want to participate in a formal night or if you just want to eat by yourselves. On Carnivals single cruises they encourage this style of dining so the singles can meet more people. There are exceptions to this but not many. On some of the newer ships the Lido is open 24 hours a day. On most of the cruise lines they offer the food of the region that you are visiting. While on Hawaiian cruises expect to be served Hawaiian food. When on an Alaskan cruise you will be given the choices of salmon and Alaskan king crab legs. It makes more fun to dine on the local cuisine. All of the cruise lines offer healthy alternative menus or what they call spa menus. So if you want low-fat, low-salt, low cholesterol, vegetarian or any other type of diet, they are available. It is best however to inform your travel agent of any special needs so they can notify the cruise line ahead of time. If you have special dietary needs make sure the cruise lines knows before hand. For example, Royal Caribbean cruises cater to food allergy, Kosher, Indian, Vegetarian and Gluten Free Diets. To be really safe read all of the cruise reviews and cruise critics sites for each ships food and service ratings. Happy Cruising, enjoy it, we do! Copyright © Mary Hanna, All Rights Reserved. Is this the 'Secret' to Getting a Job on a Cruise Ship?

 Neil Maxwell Keys

Other Articles | February 27, 2007

There is no doubt that the cruise line industry can be a tough industry to get into. This article discusses the personal quality that everyone possesses - which often means the difference between success and failure.

The cruise line industry can be a TOUGH industry to get into, make no mistake.

In fact, I sent off 25 resumes before I heard so much as a whisper when I first started applying to work onboard a cruise ship. And I know people who took over a year and several interviews before they got their job.

The people who eventually land their 'dream job' of working on a cruise ship, are generally the ones who persisted the most. These people did not give up at the first sign of rejection - they kept on applying - no matter how many knock-backs they got.

Here's one such great example of persistence that I'd like to share with you. It's an email I received a few weeks back from a girl who proved to be one of the most determined people I've come across so far.

After many, many months of trying, applying and even flying (she once flew to Belgium for an interview!) and MANY rejection letters received - she finally got her 'dream job' as a Purser for Carnival Cruise Lines.

Here's her email:

Hi Neil,I know it's been a while since I send you some news. But the last 3 weeks have been really hectic and busy.

I left Ireland last Sunday, I went back to France to visit my family and my friends and now, I'm writing you from.... MIAMI!! YEAH!!! I got the job with Carnival and I start working this Sunday. I stay at the Holiday Inn North West Corporate Center, close to Carnival's offices and everything is great.

I'm completely jet-lagged, that's why I'm on internet so early this morning. I'm actually awake since 4am!!! We have a meeting at the company today at noon to meet our manager, to get our final affectation (probably Los Angeles for me) and to have more details about the job.

I just wanted to let you know the good news. I'm really, really happy and excited (and tired!!) but I wanted to say THANK YOU for your support and your constant emails to give the strength to keep going. It's a fantastic experience that's going to start and I'm very, very glad it happened to me.

Regards,

Marie-Eve Fluechey (Republic of Ireland)

I use this email to act as a bit of inspiration, more than anything else.

You see, the people who win in this game are the people who did not give up at the first sign of rejection and instead just kept applying. So if this is what you really want to do (and you'd be mad not to!) then just go for it and keep going at it.

Eventually you WILL get there. Marie-Eve is proof of this.

Besides, the chances are that when you do start applying, you will get a few rejection letters (heck, I have a whole file full!)So what? Don't beat yourself up about it and give up hope. There are hundreds of other companies you can apply to and hundreds more positions available that you can do onboard, so just keep applying!Persistence really is the 'secret'.

Coping With Ship Holiday Mishaps Through A Cruise Ship Accident Holiday Claim

Health Articles | July 9, 2012

Anything can happen while you’re on vacation. You could win a lucky jackpot prize or fall in love. You could even meet an old friend and spark up a life-changing conversation. And then there is also that possibility of getting into an accident or falling ill while you are on a holiday cruise. It is unfortunate. But it can happen to the best of us. The good thing about it is that whatever the case may be, any threat or harm that has been inflicted on you during a trip is subject to a cruise ship accident holiday claim.

Cruise ships are a great way to spend the summer. With the right tour package, you can reach different places and maintain superb accommodations all throughout. Usually, cruise ships also feature five-star entertainment and relaxation facilities to guarantee a refreshing and satisfying stay. And it is interesting to note that there are a number of packages today that even feature around the world packages. But with its behemoth operations and a capacity of almost 3,000 passengers at a time, it’s hard for the crew to maintain safety for every individual. As such, you may find yourself suffering an injury on board and cutting your exciting trip short because of disability and pain. Now, would you think that is acceptable considering you’ve already paid for everything? And do you believe a refund is all that is called for with all the emotional, physical and financial burden an on-board mishap has caused you? That is highly unlikely. This is where a ship accident on holiday claim comes in handy, this is usually by means of the Athens Convention. This comes into effect when the cruise liner's port of departure and the destination are different or the cruise ship's port of departure and destination are the same but there is a port of call in a different country

Not only will you be able to ensure that you get adequate support for all the losses you have and might incur due to the accident, you also get to teach the company a valuable lesson about how to run their usual operations. Sure, they never meant it to happen. But it is the cruise liner's responsibility to protect their client’s safety as well as ensure that they have a splendid time. If they don’t live up to this role, then they are basically breaching the contract they’ve established upon recruiting you for the tour. Besides, it wasn’t your fault why you fell over a lose wire or slipped on a wet floor when there were no proper cautionary warnings put in place. So why would you have to suffer alone?

A cruise ship accident holiday claim involves an extensive portfolio. But some of the most commonly used types, aside from those that have been mentioned, are suffering from food poisoning, contracting a viral, bacterial or fungal infection due to poor hygiene standards, acquiring injury as a result of using faulty equipment and getting into an accident because facilities were unmanned. Now, if what you’ve experienced has not been raised in this entry, it would be best for you to contact a solicitor and ask for advice on how to file a ship accident on holiday claim.

Taking a Look at Caribbean Honeymoon Cruises

 Darlene Berkel

Travel Articles | April 17, 2007

There is more than just one kind of Caribbean honeymoon cruise available out there, but let's take a look at two possibilities available. Aboard deck of a larger cruise ship you'll find more to do than simply watch the wonderfully blue waves roll by on your Caribbean honeymoon cruise.

When it comes to Caribbean honeymoon cruises, it is not one size fits all. There is a great variety of possibilities, but we'll narrow it down to just two. If you think you'll be bored, think again. You will discover that there is much more to do then just lie on deck and watch the soothing blue waves roll by.

Some larger liners offer passengers a rock wall to climb about on, fitness trainers to work out with, pools to swim in, or masseuses to rub away the tensions that you and your significant other accumulated during the months prior the wedding ceremony. Dancing and small casino style rooms are often available to cruise passengers as well, with supervised activities for children available for those that are taking their second honeymoon.

On some of the most extravagant cruise liners you'll even find LED movie screens where you can watch movies theater style under the stars, several story promenade streets (some with parades and street musicians), golf simulators or even an ice skating rink! Almost all ships will stop to give you time for snorkeling and don't forget a favorite activity during any Caribbean honeymoon cruise: swimming with dolphins! The ocean, ship deck and cabins won't be the only places you'll see on your Caribbean honeymoon cruise either. Most ships will drop anchor more than once along the course of the cruise, giving you opportunities to snorkel with tropical fish in the warm azure waters, go mountain biking along trails in Costa Rica's rain forests, or horseback riding along the sparkling white sandy beaches.

With shows, catered meals, dancing and pool-side fun and games available at almost any hour a Caribbean honeymoon cruise aboard a large liner could leave you wanting little more than extra time out at sea. Some ships even boast multiple clubs and lounges so you'll be sure to find at least one playing your kind of music where you and your sweetheart can chill out with a tropical drink during one of at least two different cruise tours.

Eastern Caribbean honeymoon cruise tours can sail by Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas, while Western Caribbean honeymoon cruise tours can include trips by Cozumel Island, Grand Cayman, and Jamaica to name just a few ports of call. Truly it would take more than seven days on any given cruise just to take in all the opportunities for excitement and relaxation.

Small Chartered CruisesFor the newlyweds, or second honeymooners, looking for a Caribbean honeymoon cruise with a more personal touch there are smaller boats available for charter where you and your sweetheart will be the only passengers aboard. Imagine cruising the caribbean on a private yacht? Can you imagine a more romantic honeymoon vacation? This just might be the perfect ticket for an unforgettable caribbean honeymoon cruise.

Since the Grenadines are split between two different countries you can usually expect your ship to be flying one of two flags at any given time. At Bequia, Canouan, Mayereau, Mustique, Petit St Vincent and Union you can expect the St. Vincent flag to be flying overhead, while the Grenada flag is required at Carriacou and Petite Martinique. You don't have to worry about technicalities such as this, since the crew will cater to each and every detail of your cruise, while you enjoy the soothing blue waters of your romantic honeymoon cruise.

Cruise Travel Tips - Do Not Travel Without Them

 Darlene Berkel

Travel Articles | December 23, 2006

Cruise ships are a means of travel with some substantial benefits. The key advantage of a cruise ship is that it does the "getting around" for you. They make it easy to visit several places in a single trip without the need to pack your belongings each time.

You've seen the commercials, vast blue oceans, beautiful white ship, and people laughing. What a wonderful vacation, sailing the deep blue sea and visiting exciting ports of call. This is certainly a dream vacation, especially as you sit in your office cubical in the dead of winter and shiver while you answer complaint calls from clients.

Cruise ships are a means of travel with some substantial benefits. The key advantage of a cruise ship is that it does the "getting around" for you. They make it easy to visit several places in a single trip without the need to pack your belongings and sit in a car/train/bus/plane to travel to each one; your hotel room comes along with you, and even provides the transportation. Additionally, most meals are usually included in the price of the cruise.

Timing is EverythingThe most important cruise line tip is to ensure that you get to the dock on time. Although cruise ships sail from an increasing number of cities, most people still have to fly to get to and from their port of departure. If you are flying from another city into the location of your cruise line, make absolutely sure that your flight lands with enough time for you to disembark, travel to baggage claim, find your luggage and then locate a shuttle or taxi to the dock of departure. The cruise line will not wait for passengers. They are on a strict schedule of departure and arrival; the boat waits for no one. If you miss the boat, you miss your vacation.

Another important and valuable cruise line travel tip is to read all documents provided by the cruise line and your travel agent. Unless your ship's itinerary is confined to a single country, you need to prepare for a cruise like you would any other international trip, including passports. Prior to booking flights or making any other travel plans, thoroughly read all documentation provided in regards to your cruise.

There are important contracts, guidelines, requirements and procedures that must be followed prior to boarding, and during the cruise. Again, the cruise line does not care if you didn't read your documents and forgot your passport or Visa. They only care that your travel documents are in order, you've taken the time to comply with their travel requirements and that you enjoy your stay once on board.

Safeguard your LuggageNothing could be worse than going on a cruise and losing your luggage, before or after the cruise. What a nightmare! It is essential to do everything possible to ensure that your luggage does not get lost. At the cruise terminal, baggage is given to the porters for loading to the ship Make sure that your suitcase is uniquely marked so that someone does not take your luggage by mistake. Identification tags are a must, so even if your luggage ends up in the "wrong"' hands, it can easily find its way back to you.

Similar preparations are essential when leaving the cruise ship. On large ships you put a colored tag on your luggage and place it outside the cabin the night before you reach your final port, and pick it up ashore in the terminal. Some cruise lines are now offering an option where passengers can be first off the ship if they carry all their luggage off with them.

What about motion Sickness? Some people experience queasiness on cruise ships. Many people find relief from special wristbands that stimulate pressure points that are believed to counteract the nausea of motion sickness. You can also get pills that will alleviate any discomforts caused by motion sickness. Make sure to get your supply in advance and don't forget to pack them in your hand baggage. You may never need them, but it is best to have them available just in case.

Don't Overlook the DetailsIt is especially important to review the cruise summary and travel itinerary to ensure that no errors exist. This cruise line travel tip is the one that will insure you get to spend your actual vacation time doing what you planned rather than sorting out a mistake and wasting valuable time. Most of the excursion arrangements are made through your travel or booking agent prior to your arrival at the boarding gate. As you prepare to board the ship, you will be given an outline of your activities to review as you wait in line. An essential cruise line travel tip is to take the time to scrutinize these items now, as they are the outline for your entire vacation. It is easier to correct any mistakes that might have been made now, while standing in line rather than once you are one board the boat. If you wait, you will lose precious hours of you vacation.

Cruise vacations are fabulous, but this type of vacation takes a considerable amount of preparation. If you heed the advice of these cruise line tips, you will not only get onboard, but you will also have the vacation of a lifetime!

The Cruise Ship Jobs You Can Get Even Without Experience!

 Neil Maxwell Keys

Other Articles | November 6, 2008

Many people fail to land jobs on cruise ships not because of their lack of experience but because of their lack of know-how. This article reveals why you need to ensure you are applying for the position best suited to your abilities and skills and how this can land you the job you desire! This article also reveals an insiders list of cruise ship jobs that require little or no experience.

If it's your dream to work on cruise ships, find out first what jobs are available and which ones you are qualified to apply for. Certain jobs will require a high level of qualifications or specialized training such as disc jockeys, fitness instructors, dancers or youth counsellors.

Other jobs, however, require little or no qualifications or even experience, so don't be put off applying for cruise line employment if you're certain this is the career for you. Although many people believe it's impossible to break into the industry without prior experience, this just isn't true.

There are thousands of crewmembers who landed jobs with any particular skills or experience. There are many jobs that can easily be carried out using non-vocational skills and full training will be provided onboard.

Most people fail to land work on cruise ships not because of their lack of experience but because of their lack of know-how. Make sure you are applying for the position best suited to your abilities and skills and most importantly of all, is learning the knack of selling yourself. Understanding how to do this properly can quickly get you the job you want!

If you don't have qualifications or experience, here are some positions you may consider applying for right away:

* Cruise Staff - general people skills

* Casino Cashier - some customer service & cash handling experience

* Social Host - public speaking & people skills

* Gift Shop Associate - some retail or customer service experience

* Shore Excursion Staff - organizational & communication skills

* Bar Waiting Staff - full training provided

* Receptionist - organizational & admin skills

* Internet Manager - some internet experience

* Photographer - full training provided but you must show a genuine interest in photography.

* Cocktail Server - full training provided

* Tour Guide - communication & people skills

* Videographer - full training provided

* Guest Speaker - speaking skills with the ability to talk on a specific subject for an hour.

The list above isn't exhaustive but it gives you a good overview of the types of cruise ship jobs you can get with any particular qualifications.

All jobs onboard require a high level of customer service skills, so if you have this use any experience you have in other areas to get started in the industry. No matter how limited this experience is, if it is marketed in the right way you can get your foot on the cruise line employment ladder.

Many crew members have started their careers in this way and have gone on to enjoy great success. It's important to get your foot in the door and take the job you're offered first in order to get that valuable experience. You can then use this to move into another area that you're particularly interested in working in.

If you possibly can, you might consider gaining a few simple certificates that will greatly enhance your chances of success. Water safety instruction, CPR, or anything related to this area will give you the edge over other applicants when applying for cruise ship vacancies and ensure your resume looks even more impressive!

Classes are easy to find in most locations and there should be ones near you. Usually all that is required is one or two day's attendance at each course.

For more information, contact the Red Cross for details of water safety courses or CPR training. Alternatively have a look at these websites: americanheart.org or redcross.org.

After reading this article, you'll realize you already have some of the skills necessary to obtain work on cruise ships, even if you didn't think so before!

Using the Right Approach to Get Cruise Ship Jobs

 Neil Maxwell Keys

Other Articles | November 24, 2008

This article discusses why online cruise ship resume blasting services are a waste of time and money and reveals what job seekers really need to do to get hired by a cruise line company. Includes little-known tips and technique for success.

A mistake we see a lot of people make when trying to get cruise ship jobs is to use an online resume distribution service. On the face of it they appear to be a quick, easy and effective solution. But the simple matter is nearly all cruise companies hate this approach.

This type of service works by sending copies of your untargeted resume to hundreds of companies in the industry, in the hope of getting you hired for any available vacancies. All for a fee, of course.

What's more, blasting your resume to several hundred cruise line recruiters in one go is not only certain to NOT get you hired, but it's also likely to get your details permanently blacklisted by their junk email systems.

This type of tactic is known as the 'Shotgun Approach,' and is a particularly ineffective method of promoting your talent when looking for work on cruise ships. Mailing hundreds of resumes, all of which are not focused for any specific position, is not giving you the most beneficial chance of gaining employment. You haven't targeted your skills to any particular job or given a good impression of your desire to land that job.

This technique is unlikely to bring you any success. If it was a guaranteed method of landing cruise ship employment, everyone would be doing it and the companies would never need to advertise for staff ever again!

A much better tactic is the 'Rifle Approach.' This involves creating a resume and cover letter that are targeted to a particular vacancy and mailed to only one company at a time. This type of approach is much more likely to catch a recruiter's eye than an unfocused application that has been sent to hundreds of companies.

If you are having difficulty obtaining cruise ship jobs or are uncertain of some aspects of industry requirements, the following points may guide you in the right direction.

* If you aren't having much success in getting replies to your applications, check you meet the minimum requirements for the job you are applying for. Try creating a dazzling resume and a powerful cover letter, designed to catch the attention of the recruiter. Remember too, companies receive hundreds of applications each week from applicants looking for employment and neither have the time nor the resources to respond to each one individually.

* Just because you've had a letter of rejection back, it doesn't mean that you can't apply to the same cruise line again. Check over your initial application once more. Do you meet any minimum requirements? Do you have a dynamic resume? An effective cover letter? Do these show off your skills and talents to your best advantage?

If not, spend some time redoing them, not forgetting to ask a friend or relative to proofread and give an honest opinion on them. Have you included everything asked for such as references, photographs and certificates? Once you have all the necessary information and a powerful resume, there is nothing to stop you reapplying.

* The minimum age for being accepted for any position is usually 18-21, depending on which job you are applying for. In particular parts of the ship including the restaurant, bar and duty free shops, you need to be 21 years and over to secure a position. This is due to legal requirements when alcohol is being sold or served to the passengers onboard.

The starting age for entertainers, spa staff and youth staff is typically 18 years old, but be sure to check with each individual cruise line you're applying to as this varies from company to company. Whether you're just below these ages, it is still a good idea to start applying. Often the hiring staff will review an application from somebody who will be old enough shortly.

* Don't worry if you cannot swim, as this is not usually a job requirement.

* It's a good idea to include two photos in your resume - one passport sized and one full-length. Always ensure you look well groomed and cheerful in these photos! You can include these in both posted and emailed resumes, not forgetting to keep the image file small in size when sending by email.

Taking the right approach, ensuring you meet all requirements, and creating a sparkling application will certainly set you well on your way to getting cruise ship jobs.

Top Tips for Preparing a Winning Cruise Ship Job Application

Neil Maxwell Keys

Other Articles | March 14, 2007

This article reveals several great tips and techniques that anyone looking to get employed onboard a luxury cruise ship can use to create a winning application that gets them the job.

It is important when seeking a job in the cruise industry to do lots of research.

The Internet is a great tool with lots of information available for the job hunter. You need to learn how to apply, where to apply, what jobs are available, and what skills or experience are needed for the jobs onboard.

When doing your research, determine which job appeals to you. Don't just send in an application for "any position available". The cruise line will think that you are only doing this for "fun" and they probably won't take your application seriously.

Instead always begin your resume or application with your job objective clearly defined. In other words, let them know right away what position you're applying for.

For example, if you want to go and work on a ship in the onboard duty-free gift shops, then you will state this job objective at the beginning of your cover letter and at the top of your resume. The same applies for Bar Tender, Social Host, Dancer, Hair Stylist, etc. Do not put "any", you must be clear and right to the point.

Always remember that ideally cruise lines want serious, committed people who will hopefully stay around for a few contracts. It's okay if this job is only for a year or two whilst you save a bit of money, see the world and have some fun. But don't mention that to the cruise line because it costs good money to keep finding and training new hires that only stay for 6-months!When writing your resume, try to make sure that all of your skills and experience are targeted and worded to meet the requirements of a specific job. For example, if you apply to one cruise line for a job as a Casino Cashier, then everything on your resume should be tailored to back your application up.

If at the same time you also apply to a different cruise line for a position as Youth Counselor, then you should adjust your resume by re-arranging and re-wording it slightly to back this different application up.

Also consider that if your resume or application package is inaccurate, incomplete, poorly written, or goes to the wrong person, then you may have wasted your time. Go through and check for any typing or grammatical mistakes and get someone else to check it for you. A misspelling or grammatical error will get noticed before the point you're making is.

On this notes, also be sure to have your correct and current address including your postal code and country of residence. Your phone number, area code and country code should also be included, along with an alternate number for messages. Include your email address only if you have regular access to it.

In summary, finding a job on a cruise ship can require a lot of research, time and effort to seek out the position and company that's right for you and to prepare a winning job application. But many crewmembers find that the initial time and effort put into getting such a job is well worth it. After all you do get PAID to see the world, have fun and meet lots of new people of all different nationalities!

It might be an exotic dream to work aboard a cruise liner but can be just as exhausting. Among the 300 or so liners, the minimum crew is a couple of hundred. Some liners have crews of 500 or more. However, with this many employees working together at such close range, you will get to know many people very well over a period of time this way.

There are a variety of employment opportunities on cruise ships. There are positions available in the many entertainment venues on board including singers, dancers musicians, comedians and photographers. Competition is tough because the cruise line look for only the best in their fields in order to guarantee passenger satisfaction. Positions are also found in the ship\'s casinos and shops and eating facilities. These consist of waiters, waitresses, hosts, chefs, security, card dealer, slot attendants, clerks, etc. All luxury yachts need crews (marine and deck jobs) to maintain and operate the vessel, and health clubs, spas and salons are always looking for experienced staff. Openings are often found for engineers, technicians, and other crew positions.

A medical staff is also hired for the general well being of passengers and in case of emergencies. There is at least one physician and a nurse, and on some liners there are also massage and physiotherapists as part of the ship\'s staff.

Basically, people in all fields can apply for marine jobs. They pay well and a vacation is an added bonus. Applying and getting the job is the toughest part. The rest is, as everyone says, a breeze.

Finding Cruise Ship Vacancies: The Pro-Active Approach

Neil Maxwell Keys

Other Articles | February 11, 2009

97% of cruise ship vacancies are never advertised, so it's important to have a strategy in place when looking for crusie jobs. This article reveals a strategy you can use to stay one step ahead of your competition and be first in the queue when the positions become available.

It's always a good idea to have a strategy in place when looking for cruise ship vacancies.

Trawling the top websites searching for jobs unfortunately isn't enough. In this industry, a much more pro-active approach is required.

Usually when people are looking for cruise ship jobs, their first stop is recruitment websites. However, did you know around 97% of vacancies are never advertised?

That doesn't mean to say you should ignore these sites - of course not - however if you're really keen to get a cruise job then it's important that you take that extra step.

The jobs that are not advertised, how do they get filled? Well, most of them are snapped up, long before they even need to be advertised, by eager job seekers who apply directly to the cruise ship companies.

Just because you haven't seen cruise ship vacancies advertised doesn't mean the jobs don't exist or aren't available. Many people keep one step ahead by posting cover letters and targeted resumes directly to cruise line employers to ensure they're in with a good chance of getting just the job they want.

If there is a particular job you fancy doing onboard and have never noticed a vacancy advertised, don't assume no staff are needed or the post isn't available. Try this pro-active approach and you may be pleasantly surprised!

Often there are positions totally unique to a cruise line, or even a particular cruise ship, and these little-known positions rarely get advertised. Unless they're an experienced cruiser or have spoken to crewmembers, a person on the outside would have no clue that these types of positions even exist.

Many cruise ship vacancies come under this 'insider position' tag such as jobs within ice rinks, cinemas, bowling alleys, internet cafes or any other leisure amenities. If the ship has the facility, then suitably skilled staff will be needed to run it.

Many of the super liners have features like these - and many more. Some smaller liners may have too but remember - positions like this are rarely advertised.

Another great way of finding out what's available is by attending a cruise ship job fair. Many companies are now using this method to attract staff and promote their business.

Auditions and interview days are also a new way of hiring and along with job fairs are a great way of meeting current staff, getting insider information on life and work onboard, as well as giving you an excellent opportunity to make a good impression.

Recruitment days and job fairs are held throughout the year in many different countries and locations. Keep an eye out for one near you, as they are a great way of getting hired quickly.

Remember, to ensure success it's important to be pro-active in your approach to job hunting. Staying a step ahead and actively seeking out cruise ship vacancies will give you that added advantage over your competitors and mean you're first in the queue when it comes to available jobs.

Tips for the First Cruise

 Ricky Hussey

Travel Articles | August 15, 2008

Most of the times when a person is going to book a ticket for a cruise tour, he gets quite confused about which package should be booked so that it would be most suitable for his requirements. Some people get confused about which type of ship to choose while others about what kind of facilities to choose on the ship that he has selected to board for the cruise tour.

But for the sake of the clarification of such people it is worth mentioning that every cruise is of different type and there would be different amenities and facilities available on every different cruise depending upon their standards. The type of services and amenities you get on a ship depends on two factors. First being the type of cruise that has been selected and secondly the type of ship that the person selects on which he would go on cruise.

But to check for the facilities on the required cruise or a particular ship is also another headache. Some people do not have an idea about where or how to check about the facilities they would be getting on their particular cruise. But the best and the easiest way to find out about the amenities and facilities available on a particular ship is to directly get in touch with the some responsible person working in the cruise line or take a deep look at the paperwork which comes with the cruise information on booking a cruise ticket. A cheap cruise would have lesser facilities than those which have higher cost of their cruise tickets. So if a person just wants to relax on the cruise he must go for a cheap cruise but if he wants enjoy all the facilities at the cruise then he must go for the expensive package.

While a person wants to go for a cruise with a lot of facilities, he must make sure that he gets those facilities which he actually wants. This is because getting those facilities which a person do not wants would not satisfy him and he would not get properly entertained which is the sole motive of the cruise. For this the person must get in touch with the cruise’s agent directly and talk to him about what facilities he requires on the cruise ship. The agent would also provide the person with some idea that would help the customer to make proper decisions about what facilities he might require on the cruise. He would also help him to find a suitable ship which would meet the person’s standards and take care of his comfort. So consulting to the agent before boarding is the best option for choosing the ship and various facilities.

Cruise Ship Jobs: Endless Opportunities to Work in this Industry!

Neil Maxwell Keys

There has never been a better time to get cruise ship jobs. This article shows how rapidly the cruise industry is growing and why you need to act now if you are interested in getting a job that pays you to travel the world.

The opportunities to get cruise ship jobs have not been better than they are right now. Last year over 14 million people chose to take their vacation on a cruise ship, which generated over $35 billion for the industry. According to the Cruise Line International Association (CLIA) this is up 7% on the year before, which means the industry is growing quickly. This is great news for people interested in working at sea because over 348,000 people were hired to meet this demand.

This is seriously big business as another study by Seatrade shows. They have predicted 20 million passengers by 2010, with companies focusing on new destinations in and around the Pacific Ocean, Asia, Fiji and Europe.

This is excellent news for anyone seeking cruise line employment. Most liners employ somewhere in the region of 500 - 1500 members of staff so this increase in passengers will mean an additional 10,000 crew will be recruited. If you don't want to miss out, now is the time to begin getting your resume together and begin applying for these jobs.

Whenever more staff are needed, the industry tends to design bigger and better ships, with new and improved facilities, so there is a guarantee these jobs will be secure for the next few years at least. As the CLIA study shows, a cruise vacation is more popular than ever and the current demand shows no sign of slowing down.

As many companies are beginning to offer cruises to new and exciting destinations, the crew members will get to see even more amazing places than ever before. There has never been a better time to start searching out those cruise ship jobs!

December and January are perhaps the most hectic time for recruiters. This is because Christmas and the New Year period are particularly busy with cruise vacations. With liners packed full of passengers, sufficient staff are required to look after them and run the many onboard facilities and amenities. As well as this, the World Cruise season begins in January each year so opportunities for cruise ship jobs, which visit the entire globe are high. Great for those who want to see the whole world!

There aren't many jobs that will pay you whilst you visit Europe, the Caribbean, USA, Australia, the Far East, or even the Arctic! The time to start looking for cruise line employment is today, because these positions will get taken up quickly.

There are normally at least 11 new ship launches each year, so those applying now will be among the lucky ones who gain employment aboard some of the largest and most extravagant liners in the world.

It doesn't matter if you want a one off experience or plan to make a career out of it, the opportunities for cruise line employment have not been better than right now. Just a few years ago, itineraries were fairly restricted. Now you can have the chance to visit some truly exciting destinations just by applying for cruise ship jobs!

Carnival Pride Review cruise ship

 Yvon Marier

Travel Articles | March 31, 2005

Have you ever considered taking a vacation with no driving, no hassle and no worries for 7, 10, 14 days or more? How about a cruise? If you've never been to one and not sure whether it would be right for you, read on. With all the cruise lines, cruise destinations and various range of price available, there is a cruise for just about everyone.

We were a group of 4 from Canada. We booked a 7-day Mexican Riviera cruise with Carnival Pride departing from LA, USA. We made arrangements to stay a few days in LA where we visited Hollywood and the famous Venus Beach. It was the perfect start of our vacation.

On the day of our cruise departure, we head over to the pier and upon our arrival, we were immediately struck by the awesome sight of the Queen Mary, and our cruise ship was absolutely enormous as it sat there waiting for us.

It took about 45 minutes to check our luggage in and board the ship. Once on the Pride, we found our beautiful stateroom with private balcony, met our room steward, and our luggage magically appeared in our cabin. It's true that Carnival ships remind many people of newer Las Vegas resorts. We unpacked at once and made ourselves feel at home for the duration of the cruise. After watching the ship set sail from our balcony, we went for walks to get our bearings. We discovered a spa, overlooking a fitness centre filled with exercise equipments, and a hot tub in the middle of the work-out area separated by a glass wall from the rest of the room.

The first two days were sea days. We ate everything in sight, and just acted like people on vacation. The crew members are some of the friendliest and most entertaining folks I've ever met. The second day was nice and warm, we lounged around on the deck. They have plenty of deck chairs at the centre lido pool, we never have problem finding seats.

The cruise vessel has activities for the whole family 24 hours a day. A state-of-the-art theatre for quality shows and entertainment, which are all included in the cruise price. Different entertainment are featured in the theatre every evening of the cruise. They also have a number of theme bars, lounges and a disco with live music that are open into the early morning hours.

If nightlife isn't your style, you can enjoy the onboard pool, spa, library, fitness centre, shopping and other amenities. If you have children on the cruise, they have play areas and programs geared to different age groups.

All meals are "world class cuisine" and "gourmet meals", and combined with impeccable service to insure that the onboard dining experience is truly memorable. It is all included in the price of your cruise. The Pride take into account the modern casual lifestyle and provide a variety of restaurants and snack bars on board. There is a varied and plentiful breakfast and lunch buffet similar to what you would find in Las Vegas. Or you can eat breakfast or lunch in one of the ship's restaurants, order exactly what you want from the menu. Restaurants are usually open for meals for extended hours and buffets are generally open all day and into the night. Not the mention their 24-hour pizza parlour!

Cruises typically stop at a different port of call each day or every other day, depending upon distances and sailing time between points of interest. You may stay aboard the ship all day or disembark at any stop. You are free to explore each destination on your own as long as you return to the ship by the designated time. Our ports of calls were Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Los Cabos.

Puerto Vallarta:
We made arrangements to take the city tour. Riding in the comfort of a big, air-conditioned tour bus, Puerto Vallarta was a beautiful sight. Our highlight of the day was swimming with the dolphins. We literally got inside the dolphin pool, touched and kissed the dolphins. It was an experience of our lifetime.

Mazatlan:
We booked the city tour with tour-guide Frank. He gave us a private tour, took us to many places. We shopped, explored, ate, relaxed, and we had a fabulous time.

Cabo San Lucas:
There are the standard cruise shops, a marketplace of crafts and clothing, and some random street vendors doing the "braid your hair", "take a ride on my water taxi" thing. The trip on the water taxi was really nice and redeemed the Cabo experience for me. We rode around the Land's End, went up to the pelican colony, not nearly the number the pelicans living at the fishing pier in Mazatlan, went to look at the sea lions, and checked out the Pacific side of the peninsula.

Our last day on the cruise was a sad day. We had early disembarkation due to early flights (12:30). The ship was very organized and we were able to get off the ship very quickly.

All in all it was an excellent vacation. I'm very pleased with Carnival cruise.

With all these great services available at a reasonable cost, why not take a cruise vacation?

A Cruise Review To Envision The Cruise Ship Experience

 Mary Hanna

Travel Articles | July 24, 2006

There are many vacation choices but for one with great options why not consider cruise travel.  Read this cruise review to envision the cruise ship experience.

If you want to go on a vacation with great options, you might consider taking a cruise. If you have never been a cruise ship before and you are not sure whether it would be perfect for you, read on. The cruise ship experience will be much clearer after you read this cruise review.

This article will not be endorsing or promoting a particular cruise line, but will just give you some glimpses of what cruise lines are offering to cruise passengers. This includes cruise destinations, various ranges of prices and amenities available.

In some cases cruise lines will proved an option of a pre or post-cruise stay at a hotel in the town where you embark or disembark.  This is especially beneficial when you travel great distances to board your cruise ship. By using this option it actually affords you the ability to add on an extra port to explore before your cruise ship experience is over.

For instance, if your departure point is at Los Angeles, and you choose this option you will have time to visit famous places there such as Hollywood (the famous walk of stars) or Venice Beach (a funky hip beach town).

On the day of the cruise departure, you will be brought to the pier where your cruise ship is waiting for you. It will take about 45 minutes to an hour to check in your luggage, get your boarding pass and board the ship. Your room steward will meet you and this is when you should tell the steward if you have any special needs or requests.  For instance, I like two bath towels and a bucket of ice each afternoon.  They want to make you happy so don’t be shy.

It may take a couple of hours for your luggage to arrive so grab some lunch and then tour your cruise ship.  Make any beauty and spa appointments now, on some days, like formal nights appointments sell out.  Consider making these appointments on port days, especially if you have been to that port before.  The salon/spa offer discounts if you book on those days. Roam around the first afternoon to see what delights are in store for you during your cruise ship experience.

You can enjoy several relaxing moments in the spa. Celebrity has what they call a Thalassotherapy pool, Princess has a swim against the current pool and Carnival has the giant slide into the outside pool.  If you feel that you want to burn up some calories after all the wonderful meals, go to the fitness center which is equipped with modern state of the art equipment. Or you may feel like strolling around the promenade in that fresh salt air.

There are swimming pools aboard, both for adults and kids. Deck chairs and benches are also provided if you just want to watch your children enjoying the water in the pool.

Entertainment is also present in your cruising vacation. A state-of-the-art theater is provided for on-board entertainment. There will be Broadway like productions and children-oriented programs that are new and different everyday..

In case you are looking for a different entertainment, you can go to several theme bars or disco with live music open until the wee hours of the morning.

If you want to try your luck during your cruise travel, then there is an on-board casino where it features different games similar to what you see in Las Vegas.

There is a shopping center where you can find personal items and other things that you need while you are on-board. Here’s one cruise tip, try to pack things like Rolaids, bandages and toothpaste from home; they are expensive on the cruise ship

Library and recreation centers are also found on the cruise ship. Almost all cruise ships have a lending library and most have a room for playing bridge.

Food is one of the vital services offered by cruise lines. The best chefs from around the world are hired to prepare and cook excellent meals to ensure that your on-board dining experience will be truly memorable.

There are formal dining areas, which have a formal dress code on certain nights.
If you are looking for more informal style of dining, there are snack bars, cafeteria, and a pizza parlor on-board, which generally are opened for meals on extended hours. Many times the cruise lines close down one half of their Lido café (this is where they have the buffet lunch and dinner) to offer a casual place to dine but they still use a menu and servers. All of the food, no matter which style you choose are covered in the cruise prices.

Cruise itineraries generally include stops at different ports each or every other day, depending on the schedule of the cruise ship you chose.  You have the option of either staying aboard the ship or you may disembark to join other passengers on a guided tour. You are also free to explore on your own at each stop, but make sure you know the departure time of the ship.

Booking a cruise is simple. To get the best advice on cruise ships use the services of a travel agency. Read cruise reviews that you can find online to familiarize yourself on what each cruise line offers. Or, if you are already savvy to cruising, log on to the official site of a particular cruise line to check on itineraries and prices.

You will be provided information about destinations and cruise packages that are affordable. Discounts and special offers are also available for passengers.

Hopefully, this cruise review will give you some insight into what delights you will find during your cruise ship experience.

Happy Cruising!

Getting a Cruise Ship Job Made Easy!

 Neil Maxwell Keys

Other Articles | June 21, 2007

This article reveals how applicants can dramatically increase their chances of getting hired by a cruise line company by applying to some of the little-known concessionaires and agents that work for many luxury cruise line companies. It also tells why anyone of any nationality can work onboard a luxury cruise ship.

Don't limit your chances of success by only applying directly to the cruise line companies themselves. You might be surprised to know that concessionary companies and staffing agents are actually responsible for hiring a large percentage of cruise ship employees.

Too often job seekers miss this opportunity because they mistakenly assume that applying through a hiring agency or concessionary company is not the best way to get hired. For this reason the applicant 'pool' tends to be much smaller.

You can use this knowledge to your advantage and greatly increase your chances of success by making sure that you apply to as many concessionaires and staffing agents as you can, as well as applying directly to the cruise line companies.

If you're unsure what the difference is between a cruise line, concessionaire and staffing agent, then here's a quick overview:

The cruise line is the company that actually owns and runs the cruise ship. However an onboard concessionaire has a contract with the cruise line company to operate a particular service across their fleet of ships (e.g. the onboard beauty salons and the onboard gift shops, etc).

This is similar in the way that a large shopping mall will have lots of retail stores inside. The retail shop provides the particular service and the mall provides shoppers and the outlet.

It's important to know that if you're employed by a concessionaire, then you are employed and paid by that company and not the cruise line (although you still follow the same rules and regulations and get the same privileges onboard as all other staff members).

A staffing agent is someone who works on behalf of the cruise line company (or concessionaire) to provide staff for usually a wide range of departments onboard. Once you have been placed by a staffing agent, their job is usually done and all the rest of the details are handled directly between the cruise line and the employee.

Cruise Ship Jobs for International Staff?

A question I get asked quite a lot by cruise ship job seekers is:

"Is it more difficult for a non-American to get a job on a cruise ship?"

The answer of course, is a resounding "NO!"

And if you've ever been on a cruise ship and met some of the staff who work onboard, you would probably laugh at this question! For non-American cruise ship job hunters this seems to be a fairly common concern.

In fact, sadly, some people actually write and tell me that they're giving up on the idea of working on a cruise ship because they're not American...

Cruising is one of the fastest growing leisure sectors. It's a huge industry worth billions of dollars - and the biggest cruising market is... yep, America!

For this reason most of the world's cruise line companies at least have a presence there (mainly Miami). And of course, it's fairly close to the Caribbean which is the most popular cruising destination.

But does this mean that it's mainly Americans who get to work onboard and have all the fun?

Nothing could be further from the truth!

The cruise line industry is an international industry that employs tens of thousands of staff from the world over. What's more, this is probably one of the few industries that employs people from virtually any country you can think of. And many more from Countries that you didn't even know existed!

On my first ship (Carnival Fascination) there were SEVENTY TWO different nationalities of people working onboard ONE ship. This was split over about 900 crew (which also gives you a little glimpse into how much fun it can be working and socializing with all these different people from so many different backgrounds!)

And this is fairly typical.

There are tens of thousands of staff from English speaking countries working on cruise ships right now, including; Americans, British, Irish, South African, Canadian, Australian, New Zealand.

Not to mention the tens of thousands of staff from Europe, the Far East, the Middle East, South America & the Caribbean, Russia and many more.

So I'm always amazed when people tell me that they can't get a job onboard a cruise ship because they're "not American"!

I hope this has dispelled that "myth" and will prevent you from giving up and missing out on a fantastic and life-changing opportunity.

10 Tips for Success When Applying for Cruise Ship Employment

 Neil Maxwell Keys

Other Articles | October 9, 2008

When applying for cruise ship employment it's important to spend some time getting your application just right. A little time and effort at this stage will help you on your way to success and clinching that interview. By following the advice in this article you should be well on your way to a successful application for cruise ship employment. Here are ten top tips to ensure a winning cruise ship application.

When applying for cruise ship employment it's important to spend some time getting your application just right. A little time and effort at this stage will help you on your way to success and clinching that interview. Here are ten top tips to ensure a winning cruise ship application.

1. You should create a list of any previous positions you've held before, paid and voluntary. Write down any certificates you've gained from school, training or higher education. Don't forget to add any training courses you've taken part in and skills you have acquired.

2. After you have completed your list, rewrite it with your best strengths listed at the top all the way down to your 'least' strength. Be honest about your strong points and weaknesses.

3. Now it's time to find out what cruise ship vacancies are presently available. The majority of cruise lines will place advertisements with the leading job websites online, so spend some time looking through these. Use a search engine to locate the top employment sites.

4. Consider the available positions and weigh up which vacancies are best suited to your experience, your qualifications, your skills, your personality, and your aspirations. Take some time to consider what cruise ship employment is the best fit for you.

5. After you've chosen which cruise ship vacancies to apply for, start building your resume. Check it carefully to ensure no spelling mistakes and make sure it looks professional i.e. typed correctly with proper spacing and aligned margins, etc. Try to make your resume as imaginative and interesting as possible to stand out from other applications.

6. Write confidently! Select powerful words that portray you as a confident person with a strong belief in your own abilities. Never over-estimate your capabilities but at the same time don't undervalue yourself either. Just be honest and choose words that sound right for you.

7. If you are applying for more than one cruise ship job, optimize your resume accordingly for each vacancy. Change it a little to target the positions you're writing your application for, ensuring that any relevant abilities and skills you have in this field are highlighted. This point is essential in the cruise ship industry.

8. Once your resume is polished and sparkling, give it to family and friends to critique. This is a good way to spot any errors you may have overlooked and get an honest opinion on its appearance and content.

9. Now your resume is out of the way, its time to concentrate on your cover letter. This part is crucial so spend extra time getting it just right. Your cover letter is the key to enticing the recruiter to read your resume; and your application should invite the hiring manager to call you and practically beg you for an interview!

10. Once everything is completed, it's now time to send it. Don't spend days or even weeks drafting copies until its perfect. If you can, start right now and get your cruise ship employment application ready as soon as possible. Concentrate on nothing else until it's ready, you want to secure that interview within the next week.

That's it! Now just sit back and wait until that interview letter pops through the door. While you're waiting, here are three bonus tips to improve your chances even more.

Bonus Tips

1. Ensure your application is addressed correctly. Have you spelt the receiver's name correctly? Did you make sure you got the correct position for them? Always double check because the last thing you want is to make a mistake at this important part!

2. Whilst you're waiting to hear from the company, brush up on your interview techniques. Consider the questions you may be asked and think how you will answer.

Cruise Ship Jobs: Why Bigger Isn't Always Better!

 Neil Maxwell Keys

Travel Articles | February 13, 2009

The number and the size of cruise liners is ever increasing. This article discusses the current cruise ship job opportunities as well as the benefits and negatives of working on large and small ships.

Usually when people envision having a cruise ship job, they think of a huge liner a dozen stories high, full of thousands of holidaymakers enjoying their voyage aboard a floating resort, which is well equipped with just about every facility and service you could ever need.

Indeed the number of cruise liners such as this is ever increasing and it seems the superliners are getting bigger and bigger every year, all vying for the title of The World's Largest Cruise Ship! Improved amenities, more passengers, and best of all more job vacancies, which is excellent news for anyone seeking cruise line employment.

Royal Caribbean is due to launch the first of its Oasis Class ships in 2009. This superliner can hold a whopping 6,400 guests, which is about 4,000 more than the present biggest ship on the planet can carry.

Opportunities for work on cruise ships are going to increase dramatically as these new liners take to the seas, meaning many more chances will be available to earn a living while travelling the world!

Cruise ship employment on these superliners can prove to be much more than just a job and the work can actually be great fun. There are lots of fellow crew members onboard, modern amenities, extra services and creature comforts, and usually the cabins are bigger and better equipped. There are a much higher number of passengers on board too, and both these and the crew will be from a greater range of countries and nationalities.

However, one downside to the larger ships many crew experience, is the fact life onboard is much more hectic. Staff are a lot busier dealing with the extra passengers and the atmosphere is less intimate. Making lasting friendships is even harder and it's not uncommon to meet somebody on board and then not see them again for several weeks, even months. Although in certain circumstances, this may be regarded as a good thing!

If it's an intimate experience you're after, it may be worthwhile exploring other avenues. Jobs on cruise ships are not only restricted to superliners with thousands of guests and hundreds of crewmembers.

Some of the slightly lesser known companies offer cruises aboard much smaller ships. This usually brings about a more laid-back and more friendly, intimate environment for both guests and crewmembers.

There is a wide range of opportunities available on smaller types of vessels in the cruise industry, including jobs on small yachts, large yachts, ferries, motorized sailboats, sternwheelers, river barges, exploration ships, and windjammers. These types of craft are often the venue for cruises with a more specialized theme such as river tours, environmental cruises, diving expeditions, naturalist cruises, or even simply for sailing adventures.

Those crew who have worked on both large and small ships usually prefer the intimacy and enjoy the more personal environment of working on smaller cruise ships. That's not to say they don't like the larger liners, just choose to share a more relaxed and friendly experience with their fellow crew members and guests.

A distinct advantage of the smaller ships is their ability to navigate where the larger liners can't. This means visits to destinations that are much more unique and exclusive - not to mention exciting!

For instance, imagine a cruise in Alaska - the smaller ship is able to venture closer to the glaciers and along straits that would be impossible for the larger liner to navigate.

Even the cruise ship jobs available may vary on a smaller craft. Vacancies for jobs such as Naturalists or Dive Masters are often to be found with smaller companies, whereas you won't find these offered by the larger liners.
